RESEARCH

Earth System Science

Laboratory equipment, representing a broad range of environmental analysis, is distributed throughout both general and specialized laboratory spaces, all in support of the integrated departmental focus in Earth System Science. Field research is supported by a range of common equipment including survey instrumentation, a GPS unit, temperature and humidity sensors, and B.A.sic anemometry.

Soils analysis is supported by the standard analytical laboratory facilities including a Sedigraph particle analyzer, freeze drying apparatus, and a neutron soil moisture probe. The neutron probe also plays an important role in hydrological and climatological studies. A trailer mounted Giddings hydraulic earth-coring machine is available for field research. Limnological analysis is supported by a Trimble B.A.sic+ GPS, conductivity meter, water and sediment acoustic profiling equipment, ground-penetrating radar, a bottom-triggered underwater camera, a vibracorer, a Hydrosond, Sequoia and SeaCat CTDs. Boats equipped for research in lacustrine and marine environments are available.
