Geographic Information Science
A growing discipline, Geographic Information Science (GISC) is an increasingly
important component of management and research in urban planning, resource
management, engineering, business, law, surveying, epidemiology and health
care planning. In particular, GISC deals with the collection, analysis,
and management of spatial information. GPS technology, car navigation,
internet mapping, and location-based services all depend upon GISC analysis.
The growth in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) reflects the importance
of location to many of the problems in society from the everyday to the
monumental. Whether we are trying to use GIS in our vehicle to determine
the best route to work, or determine areas likely to be flooded as global
warming continues, the question of “where” is fundamental.
The GISC program provides a unique learning environment that includes
small classes, personal attention, state-of-the-art facilities, project-based
learning and community involvement. There are also options available for
work experience placements with government and industry partners in the
third and fourth years of study. The breadth and flexibility of this program
provides an important stepping-stone for challenging career opportunities
in government, business, and research.
