As governments focus on issues of attraction, integration and retention of Francophone immigrants to Francophone minority communities in Canada, there is a need to reflect critically on the tensions between Francophone identities and the experiences of recent immigrants and what the implications are for social justice and citizenship. My research focuses on the everyday negotiations of identity and recent immigrant experiences where ethnocultural diversity is challenging how Francophone minority communities imagine themselves and the world around them. Tensions exist between traditional ideas concerning legitimacy, authenticity and collective identity and cosmopolitan visions of French as a form of global linguistic capital (asset). More specifically, I investigate how existing Francophone identities – Acadian and Franco-Ontarian – might be reshaped and how pluralistic ideas of inclusion can to be encouraged in Canada.
Alors que les gouvernements focalisent leur attention sur l’attraction, la rétention et l’intégration des immigrants dans les communautés francophones minoritaires du Canada, il existe un besoin pour une réflexion critique sur les identités francophones et les expériences des nouvelles arrivées et leurs implications pour la justice sociale et la citoyenneté. Ma recherche porte sur les négociations quotidiennes des identités quand la diversité ethnoculturelle pose un défi aux façons dont les communautés francophones minoritaires s’imaginent et conçoivent le monde autour d’elles. Des tensions existent entre les arguments traditionnels de légitimité, d’authenticité et d’identités collectives, et les visions cosmopolites du Français comme forme de capital linguistique global. Plus spécifiquement, il souhaite savoir comment les identités francophones existantes – acadienne et franco-ontarienne – négocient de nouveaux espaces francophones et comment des idées pluralistes d’inclusion peuvent être encouragées au Canada.
