26 nivôse an V. Description/Comments: On the 15th of January, following up on the victories at Rivoli on the previous day, General Joubert was able to chase the Austrians north to the Madonna della Corona and then to chase them from the heights. Standing at the top of the Madonna della Corona as the Austrians rushed into the gorge, the French forces were able to decimate what remained of d’Alvintzi’s army. Bagetti’s view is oriented to the south as the Austrians rush through the gorge leading back into the Alps. The Austrian soldiers are just visible as they scurry down the narrow path and are picked off by French gunfire from above. The military administration seems to have liked this view but again found that the rock face was too grey and that it lacked definition. This too was the occasion of some irritated correspondence from Bagetti.[i]
