Description/Comments:  This pen and ink sketch of the battle of Loano should be compared with the watercolour of the same battle. The two images are very similar in structure. They have the same angle and coverage of view, with the watercolour very slightly cropped on the right side of the painting. The foreground has been elaborated in the watercolour. Troops have been added and they are not always exactly as they were placed in the pen and ink sketch. Houses in all locations but the main settlement areas have been obscured in the watercolour. Everywhere in the watercolour the vegetation has acquired definition and distant hills have acquired shading that gives them depth. The sky looks much the same in both images. It must have been remembered as a cloudy, hazy day.

Martinel has signed this sketch to verify that it was executed on site. The angle of view  is also given, in the lower right-hand corner and, as it is in Italian, it was probably penned by Bagetti himself.
